Onwards and Upwards: Public Housing's Impact on Lives

Imagine the profound impact when young adults transition from living with their parents. Consider the hope that comes with new beginnings after leaving incarceration. In previous years, the average middle-class person may not have considered public housing an option. However, with the rise of inflation and the ongoing economic crises, think about the relief for those unable to afford skyrocketing rent rates. Public housing is pivotal in filling these crucial gaps, providing stability, empowerment, and a second chance.  Stories abound of individuals who have transformed their lives through public housing, finding a stepping stone to a brighter future from independence to newfound opportunities; public housing proves its importance by paving the way toward success, one life at a time. Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis

The Mask

Do you often find your boss being harsh on you? Don't be disheartened just yet. Sometimes, their seemingly relentless expectations show that they see your potential. The truth is, they might be secretly preparing you to step into a leadership role without your knowledge.  So, instead of feeling overwhelmed, embrace the challenge and trust your abilities. Remember, the toughest bosses can be your most incredible mentors, molding you into a capable successor. Stay determined and keep learning; the demanding boss might groom you to lead.  Sincerely,  Kurtice Lewis

A Year Sabbatical.

A lot has happened in the past year. First, let me start by saying why I took a year-long break from my blog. There were many things to learn as I settled into my new role at my new job. Things started slow and then quickly became overwhelming. The load has kept up, but I have a handle on the workflow.  This blog post isn't just about updating you on my career journey; it is more of a reminder that it is ok to take a break when things get too hectic. Prioritize tasks and put things into perspective. I wouldn't have to take any breaks shortly. If I do, it is likely because I am going through another process of leveling up. ☺  Kurtice,

Dealing with grief

Processing the loss of a loved one is never easy. Although it is inevitable that at some point in our lives we will have to deal with major losses, it never gets any easier. We, the surviving family members have to somehow find a way to pick up the pieces and move on. One important thing to remember, is that we all grieve in our own way. So, never judge yourself or others for not grieving in the way that may seem politically correct. It is your grief to bare, so you have to handle things on your own timing. Being there for close friends that have lost a loved one is also very important. Just being there to be a shoulder to lean on and cry on if need be. A listening ear and a pillar of comfort.  To anyone who has lost a loved one or friend in this season of your life, just know that you are not alone. Take the time to ensure that your mental and emotional health is in tact. Do not put any pressure on yourself to hurry back to work, meet deadlines, or any of that. Remember that if yo...

The more you know

Do you actually know a lot, let alone enough about your industry?  It's been said that if you can't find at least 10 things about your industry that you can teach someone else, then you do not know enough. If you are worried about giving away all of the secret sauce then perhaps it's time to level up. Time to take more courses, find more mentors, or do more research about your industry.  The last thing you want, is for newbies to enter your field of expertise and surpass you quicker than the time it took you to master your craft. You also don't want others who are in your industry to know more than you. Take the time out to assess where you are, how much do you actually know? How much can you teach to someone else about your industry? If you discover that your knowledge is limited and you barely find 10 topics to discuss in your field of interest, then you may not know enough.  Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Ambition

Lets talk about it. A word that can easily be vilified. Having ambition is not a bad thing, but operating in ones own self interest to the detriment of others can be. If everyone benefits, then there should not be anything wrong with it, once you are not purposely undermining the parties involved. There is also such a thing as ambition that can lead to unhealthy personal and health choices. We can be so focused on a goal that we ignore our personal, mental, physical, social and spiritual well being just to name a few. Chase after those big dreams, goals and aspirations. Having something enormous to chase after is good for our growth in life. Just be sure to take a moment to assess your life choices. Make you and the ones around you are in a good, healthy place. Otherwise, when its all said and done, you and the ones around you will be miserable and the entire journey would not have seemed worthwhile.  Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

The world tells you the truth

We all think that we are one of a kind special snowflakes, and you might be right. However, the journey to find out which industry and which specific roles we are supposed to be in in order for this to be proven is for some much more difficult to discover than others. For many, it may take an entire lifetime before they realize that the industry or role they were in all this time was not the right one for them in order for them to be the legend they were meant to be. Rest assured, the world will show you right away the truth about your talent, skills and ability. Unfiltered and unashamed. So be prepared to face the music. We may be special and extremely talented, but just make sure it is in the correct area designed for you. If not, then you will find out either quickly or eventually from the public. When this happens, don't get upset, depressed or offended. You may not be the snowflake you thought you were in that particular field, but that doesn't mean you may not be better s...

Honesty is the best policy

Selling lies in todays society most definitely seems to be the norm these days. Facing the truth is way more difficult than just simply choosing to believe a lie that is wrapped in some comforts that help us to avoid the truths that we don't want to deal with.  The issue with this is that the unavoidable truth is never going to go away. You are going to have to face the music one way or the other. Also, the realty of it is that in order for us to grow and level up we will need to tackle the truth head on.  Avoid putting yourself in situations where the only choice you may appear to have is to lie in order to avoid an uncomfortable situation. That also will not serve the ones around you in a good net positive way. Honesty is always the best policy. Believe it or not, you will gain more respect for being known as someone who tells the truth, rather than being known for being a liar. They may not like it at first because the truth stings like bees, but they will eventually get o...

Work life balance

Life can get extremely busy and out of hand very quickly and easily. On the list of things that are pressing most people, is the topic of work life balance . There's a lot of variety in opinions on this topic and I can't say for sure which is correct and which isn't. I tend to lean more to the side of " you can have everything, just not all at once" . So, its not so much a work life balance, but more or less a juggling act. I've had to make some serious sacrifices in life when it came to this area and it was not easy at all.  We can have everything and do everything, just not all at once and at the same time. You may have to put some things off for a season in your life. Just make sure to be intentional about your choices because your calendar will have to be your best friend, if you want to see any improvements in your work life balance. Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Predicting Success

Our brains are naturally wired to see danger everywhere. We see the world from a pessimistic point of view due to the fact that we had to survive through the toughest environments and terrain.  What served us in a good way as humans in one season of our lives, have now turn around to bite us in the tail end. We have to actively fight against the natural urge to view the world through this narrow lens of pessimism. Instead of following the rabbit hole of negative thoughts and self talk, we need to ask ourselves positive counter questions. "What if this business doesn't fail?"   "What if this isn't the worse date that I've ever been on?"   "What if this pitch/presentation is a homerun?"   By simply changing the narrative in our minds, we take back control over the negative thoughts that try to dominate our minds on a regular basis. Anxiety is predicting failure, confidence comes from predicting success. So, start rewiring your brain for success ...

You are what you eat

Whatever you are not changing, you are choosing. Are you having issues in certain areas of your life that you wish can change? Maybe it's issues with your weight, your relationships, your career, etc. What steps are you taking on a daily bases to make the necessary changes in order to improve the situation? We can easily fall into the complacency of life and just accept where things are now and even feel as though maybe they might never change. Some of us feel as though "this is just how things are" and accepted it. We might be even experiencing trauma from our past that make us feel deflated and defeated to even try.  Just know, that whatever we are not actively changing we are deciding to just accept and choose the current state of being. If that is what you want then fine, that is ok as well. Just be aware that things are not going to change on their own. It is going to take effort on our part to fix things and make the changes in our lives that we want to see. If we...

Don't drink the Cool Aide

In todays culture, the popular narrative is to hate your 9-5, leave the work force and become an entrepreneur, or go live in Bali and become a digital nomad. Not saying that there's anything wrong with these choices, but only if you have the self awareness to know if those things fit who you are and your personality. Don't look for reasons to quit your job because you don't like your boss, coworkers and just being there in the first place.  If you do, then you are missing out on a lot! You have to shift your mindset from this thinking and look at all the things you are missing out on, especially in those early days of your work career. Use the time to build up your future financially. Create a solid plan, so that when you are ready to jet set across the world to work from a beach on your own timing, you wont have to worry about your finances and stress over running out of money. You will be able to make decisions more freely and be less stressed over getting clients for you...

Opportunity knocks only once!

Really but not really.  There are times when chances come around more than once. However, you still have to be in a state of readiness and preparedness to be able to take advantage of those opportunities. Although there are exceptions to the rule of opportunities knock only once, there is a window and that window closes much faster than you think. So, take the time to work on yourself, increase your education in an area that will advance you, save up your money and get ready to invest. You don't want to be left on the sidelines of a major opportunity because you did not take the time to prepare yourself for when it comes knocking.  If you stay ready, then you never have to get ready - unknown Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Love is the Mission

Loving what you do is the essential ingredient in making it in life. Especially as it pertains to the world of business.  The number one question that is on everyone's mind daily is, "what is my purpose". This is a very difficult question to answer and the response will be different for everyone. However, if you start by having a mission, work towards that mission but make sure that love is the foundation in that mission. Figure out what that mission is first, but make sure that you absolutely love it.  The rest comes easy because you are operating from a place of love. The hard and difficult days will be much easier to power through because you love this thing so much. Those same task can become very daunting if you are doing it solely for profit and not from love. So, make sure that whatever it is you decide to do, make sure love is the mission. Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Seeking Validation

We all need some encouragement from time to time. It is good to help re-enforce our positive energy. We like to feel as thou the job that we are doing is great.  However, it can get to the point where we over reach and depend on these words of encouragement as a crutch. It can easily flow over into a state of being toxic. We can't get to hung up on the validation of others to make us feel worthy. Constant work needs to be done on our self confidence and self belief so that we can function in the work place and also in life.  Find ways everyday to build the strong self belief in your skills, talents and abilities. Do some self development as well, to help build a strong character, strong personality, and strong self outlook on the outside and inside of yourself. When you do these things, it will never matter what anyone has to say about you, because you already have the only voice that matters inside of your own head to listen to. That voice is saying you are more than enough a...

Being Thankful

Its that time of year again, the start to the holiday season.  I am very grateful this year more than most and excited for what the future holds. Take the time out this season to see what areas of your life and career are you grateful for. Are you excited for new beginnings, new challenges, new experiences etc? If not, then it may be time to make a shift, or maybe you are in a season like many of us where we are still in the middle of a bounce back. Either way, I hope that you do have something to be grateful for, even if it is something minute. Happy Holidays  Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Environment is mental health

The environment that you work in is just as important as the environment that you are surrounded with outside of the workplace. The workplace environment, if done correctly, can contribute to the betterment of the mental health of everyone involved.  They both are equally as important. For instance, if your home is untidy, you are not living in a safe neighborhood, if you never have anything to eat or your only options are unhealthy ones, just to name a few, then it will have a negative affect on your mental health and your ability to perform at a high level.  On the work place side, your work place environment on a whole is key. The physical things but also the mental part. How your managers, supervisors or clients interact with you. Their leadership or communication style has an affect on the employees and the moral of the office and or the team. Is it a positive experience overall or is it an unpleasant one? Maybe it is a high stressed roll and has everyone on edge and incr...

Comfort zone

This place where we exist that allows us to live and operate in a safe space. Some may even call it a sweet spot. A sort of "Freedom Oasis" if you will. The freedom to move around and be happy and satisfied with where we are and what we have accomplished. However this comfort zone, without any notice, overtime can quickly turn into a trapped box.  In order to escape this trap of adequacy, we have to step out of our comfort zones and reach a state of optimal anxiety. Where we are constantly feeling as though mediocrity is biting at our heals and the only way to get away, is by moving forward. The best things in life are always found on the journey along the road to greatness. So make sure you step out of your comfort zone before it is too late and you find yourself barricaded inside of a fence of your making.  Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

A lot to offer

We often find ourselves being in denial about our own capabilities. Remind yourself daily and often that you Do have a lot to offer. Never doubt yourself and feel as though you are less than. Reflect on all the things that you bring to the table. Remember that you have a set of skills and life experiences that gives you an advantage over the people that has Zero skills and life experience in your field.  So, make sure to focus on what you have to offer and work on those skills continuously. Develop those skills and further your knowledge and education in that area of your life. Once you do these things then you will excel at your craft and have the confidence to execute when called upon. Believe in yourself and never let anyone make you feel less than.   Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis

Nerves of steel

The reason why you are nervous about that presentation, is because deep down you feel like an imposter. you feel as thou you do not have what it takes. You are not confident that you have the ability to execute on your job at hand. It takes a mindset shift. Lets just say you are under qualified for the role that you are in. The way to overcome this nervousness, is to tell yourself "I am qualified", "I do have the skills", "The outcome of this presentation doesn't even matter", "Regardless to if they like it or not, who cares" We put a lot of pressure on ourselves because we are expecting a desired outcome. If we take the end results out of the equation, then we have nothing to worry about. Think about the end as though you have already conquered this task and no matter how the presentation goes, it is of no consequence. Regardless to whatever happens, just give it your best and leave the rest. Sincerely, Kurtice Lewis #Kurticelewis
